The Advanced Diploma in Accounting and Finance is designed to provide the essential knowledge and progression route for a higher education qualification and career opportunities in the accounting and fuinance areas. Students will study subjects covering business, finance and accounting. Students will gain knowledge and skill in areas such as Management and Cost Accounting, Accounting Information System, Taxation Practice, Corporate Financial Management, Ethics and Corporate Governance, Financial Reporting, Corporate Law, Financial Markets and Institutions. Students will be exposed to a full range of management skills that is useful to succeed in today’s business environment. They are also encouraged to be critical thinkers and learners that will enable them to embark on further learning and professional career developments.

This module aims to allow learners who work in or want to work in accounting environments where they will be required to use management accounting techniques which contribute to effective decision making and control. This module covers inventory management, short-term decision making, accounting for overheads, budgetary planning and control, working capital management, standard costing and variances, costing methods, long-term decision making and management information systems.

This course provides an overview of accounting information systems (AIS) from the accountant’s perspective. The role of modern information technology usage and the impact of computerized accounting systems on businesses is examined. You will study the role of information systems in accounting and enhance your IT skills through the appropriate use and application of industry-standard software. Current issues in accounting information technology are also discussed, allowing the individual learner to equip themselves with the ability to apply, record, classify, communicate and analyze financial Information through the use of the appropriate accounting software.

The overall aim of this module is to enable students to examine the conceptual and computational principles of Singapore taxation system and its impact on Individuals and businesses. It will cover the fundamental principles of Singapore tax law and practice, including the overall function and purpose of taxation in a modern economy, the obligations of individual and corporation taxpayers, and the computation of tax liabilities. It will also expose students to tax planning, the taxation principles of VAT and IHT.

This module is designed to allow students to develop the skills to make financial decisions with a view to maximizing firm value, in the Corporate Finance unit. Financial decisions made in the context of world financial markets often impact shareholder wealth. This unit will help you understand how you can positively influence the outcome of these decisions.

This module builds on and complements the foundational knowledge acquired through accounting and finance modules. Leveraging insights gained from, students deepen their understanding of ethical considerations within accounting practices and auditing standards. Furthermore, knowledge from finance modules enriches the comprehension of governance principles within financial decision-making contexts. By integrating these diverse perspectives, this module equips students with a holistic understanding of the ethical and governance dimensions inherent in accounting and finance professions, fostering their ability to uphold integrity and transparency in professional practice.

This module is designed to build and extend students’ knowledge of the impact of accounting theory, law and practice on corporate accounting. A number of accounting standards are considered and key topics in the preparation of general-purpose financial reports are addressed.

This module introduces students to understand the role that commercial and corporate law plays in conducting successful business in the modern global environment. In this unit, students investigate critical aspects of commercial and corporate law to become successful business owners, managers and consulting professionals. Students will also be introduced to cross border (domestic and international) implications of Singapore commercial and corporate law.

In this unit students will learn about how the financial markets work and how funds move from savers to borrowers and investors. They will understand how this movement of funds creates instruments that assist in this movement. Further, they will explore the different financial institutions in the financial markets and learn of how they utilize the various financial instruments to effect the movement of funds. Finally, they will learn about the financial markets that use the various financial instruments.

Each module is assessed by academic work comprising written assignments, case study reports, essays, examination as determined by the subject profile. The assessment criterion varies from module to module and level to level.
