Diploma

In Biomedical Science

About the Programme

The Diploma in Biomedical Science is designed to equip students with a solid foundation in biological and medical sciences. It covers key subjects such as human physiology, biochemistry, and microbiology. The programme emphasizes theoretical knowledge and prepares students for careers in medical laboratories, research institutions, or the healthcare sector. Students learn to understand disease mechanisms and support medical diagnostics.

Programme
Modules

The module provides a foundational understanding of the structure and function of cells, the basic units of life. Students will explore cellular components, including membranes, organelles, and the cytoskeleton, as well as processes such as cell division, signalling, transport, and energy production. This module provides students with the basic knowledge needed to understand more advanced topics in biomedical science.

This module introduces students to the fundamental chemical processes within living organisms. It covers the structure and function of bio-molecules such as proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, and nucleic acids. Students will learn about enzymatic activity, basic metabolic pathways, and the regulation of metabolism. This module lays a critical foundation for advanced studies in biomedical science and supports the understanding of health, disease, and therapeutic interventions.

This module introduces the fundamental principles of human physiology, focusing on how major organ systems such as the nervous, cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, digestive, endocrine and musculoskeletal systems function and interact to maintain homeostasis.  Students will learn about cellular processes and responses to functions and be able to interpret basic physiological data, forming a strong foundation for further biomedical studies.

This module introduces the fundamental principles of immunology, focusing on the structure and function of the immune system. Students will explore the innate and adaptive immune responses, key immune cells and organs, antigen-antibody interactions, and mechanisms of immune regulation. The module also covers immunological disorders such as hypersensitivity, autoimmunity, and immunodeficiency. Students will gain basic knowledge that will prepare for future work in biomedical science, medical testing, and healthcare.

This module introduces students to the fundamental concepts of microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites. It covers microbial structure, physiology, classification, growth, and reproduction, as well as the roles microbes play in health and disease. Students will explore methods of microbial control, sterilization, and antimicrobial agents, alongside principles of immunology and host-pathogen interactions. This module equips students with essential microbiological knowledge and skills relevant to biomedical science and clinical diagnostics.

This module provides students with a foundational understanding of molecular mechanisms that govern cellular processes. It covers the structure and function of nucleic acids, DNA replication, transcription, translation, gene regulation, and genetic mutations.  Students will be able understand genetic mutations and their implications in disease.  This foundational knowledge is essential for further studies in genetics, biotechnology, and medical diagnostics.
