Advanced Diploma

In Biomedical Science

About the Programme

The Advanced Diploma in Biomedical Science provides in-depth knowledge and essential skills in medical and laboratory sciences.  It is designed to prepare students for roles in clinical laboratories, research institutions, and the biomedical industry.  The curriculum also builds a strong foundation for further studies in biomedical or health-related fields.  Graduates will be equipped to support medical testing and research, contributing to healthcare and scientific advancements.

Programme
Modules

This module provides an in-depth understanding of disease processes at the cellular and molecular level. It covers the principles and practices of histopathology and cytopathology, including tissue preparation, staining techniques, and microscopic examination.  Students learn to identify normal versus abnormal cellular structures and understand pathological changes associated with diseases such as cancer, inflammation, and degenerative conditions.

Students will have an in-depth exploration of hormone systems and their regulatory roles in human physiology. Students will study the structure, function, and mechanisms of action of key endocrine glands and hormones, along with the intricate cellular signalling pathways they activate. Topics such as feedback control systems, receptor biology, second messengers, and signalling networks will be covered. This module equips learners with essential knowledge for biomedical research, diagnostics, and clinical laboratory applications related to hormonal health.

This module helps students to develop an in-depth understanding of the mechanisms by which microorganisms cause disease in humans. It explores the biology and virulence factors of key bacterial, viral, fungal, and parasitic pathogens, as well as host-pathogen interactions, immune evasion strategies, and the role of the microbiome in health and disease. Emphasis is placed on clinical relevance and real-world applications, preparing students for roles in clinical diagnostics and research.

In this module students will explore gene expression, inheritance patterns, and genomic technologies. It also introduces fundamental bioinformatics tools used for analysing genetic data, including sequence alignment, gene annotation, and database searching. Through lectures and case studies, students will gain the skills necessary to apply genetic and bioinformatics knowledge in clinical and research settings.

This module helps students to understand the biochemical processes underlying human health and disease. It covers the principles and methodologies used to analyze body fluids, focusing on the diagnosis, monitoring, and management of metabolic disorders, organ dysfunction, and endocrine abnormalities. Students learn to interpret biochemical test results in clinical contexts and explore the role of biomarkers in disease detection.

This module focuses on developing essential competencies required for professional practice in biomedical science. It covers skills such as critical thinking, laboratory techniques, data analysis, and problem-solving. The module emphasizes the ability to interpret and apply scientific knowledge effectively in laboratory settings, ensuring students can demonstrate proficiency in research, reporting, and presentation.
