This module is the foundation to the understanding of the principles and concepts of Accounting. It will cover the principles behind the construction of financial reports. Topics covered include the double entry recording system, financial statements, statement of cash flow, accounting standards, accounting equations, financial ratio analysis, valuation and measurement of assets and liabilities, and accounting for partnership formation and liquidation. Students will be exposed to the application of these accounting concepts in the preparation of financial statements for use by individuals, business, non-profit organisations and government institutions. Students will also be developing expertise in using these accounting principles and concepts in their analytical approach to financial problem-solving.

Understanding statistical terminology and statistical principles, concepts and tools can assist us to make more effective decisions in our personal and professional lives. In this subject, you will be introduced to some of the key concepts in business statistics. The key to success in the subject lies in understanding and applying the concepts. Such effort will also lead to maximum long term ability to utilise these tools and principles more effectively.

Economic issues play a very important part in all our lives, as citizens, as consumers and as employees or employers. Understanding economic terminology and being able to use economic principles, concepts and tools can assist us to make more effective decisions in our personal and professional lives. In this subject, students will be introduced to the key concepts in economics, and are encouraged and assisted to apply the concepts and tools in a variety of contexts. The key to success in the subject lies in regular and consistent effort to learn, understand and apply the concepts.

This unit introduces students to the study of Management and the basic academic skills relevant to University study in this discipline. The topics students examine include managerial work in organisations, historical and contemporary theories in management, the management environment, social responsibility and managerial ethics, planning and managerial decision making, managing individuals and groups, motivation, leadership, employment relations and managerial control. A number of themes are addressed throughout the subject such as diversity (gender and cross-cultural influences), power and control, and organisational learning. Organisational learning will be seen as one of the key challenges facing managers in the next millennium.

In this module students will be provided an introductory explanation to the origin of money and its roles in the past and present money systems. It will also provide an insight to the mechanics of how currencies work in a market economy and how Central banks can use an instrument to regulate the growth of the economy. The relationship between interest rate and price of currency is also discussed in a broader perspective.

The course addresses the fundamentals of Banking Law, starting with basics of contract law, agency and relevance to banking, the banker-customer relationship, duties of the banker and the customer as well as exposes the student to legal aspects of lending and security taking.

This module relates the understanding of the principles and practices of lending. It provides the fundamental concepts and knowledge to effectively manage the lending requests made by customers in a structure lending cycle, including the repayment or recovery of such advances. The student is given a broad framework of the lending environment and the legal regime in which lenders operate, before moving onto analysing the different types of customers, their lending requirements and the wide range of lending services that can be used to satisfy those lending needs. It also covers the process of debt recovery. Students will be taught the principles, concepts, techniques and methods of lending. It also prepares the students for more advanced studies in Banking and Finance at Bachelor Year 2 level.

The course addresses the fundamentals of banking and finance, on which subsequent and more specialised finance units are based. Students will be taught on the institutional features of financial systems and identify key issues and problems arising in banking and finance.
