This module outlines the principles of homeostatic control mechanisms operating at molecular, cellular, tissue, organ and whole body levels. It also explains cellular homeostasis, nutrient and energy balance, thermoregulation and cardiovascular homeostasis. The module aims to investigate homeostatic principles applied to selected physiological systems, to illustrate mechanisms and processes through which the human body maintains the constancy of the internal environment.

This module aims to provide an introduction to cellular components and processes involved in the birth, life and death of cells. It also looks at a range of biological analytical techniques used for elucidating cellular structure and function. The role of abnormal cellular function in pathology is also highlighted in this module.

This module aims to provide a sound understanding of the immune system as an integrated system of tissues, cells and molecules. It also focuses on clarifying the functions of the immune system in health and disease. The concept of how dysfunction of the immune system is associated with disease is also explored in this module. Through this module students are made to critically examine current and future therapeutics for these diseases.

This module aims to consolidate students’ understanding of the application, value and limitations of biochemical tests in clinical medicine. Through this module, students are exposed to how biochemical tests are selected and how they are interpreted. In this module students are encouraged to examine statistical procedures relevant to interpretation of clinical biochemical data and to quality control. 

This module aims to discuss the layout of major pathways of intermediary metabolism and to understand their regulation and integration. It also focuses on consolidating understanding of metabolic adaptations to acute and sustained exercise and to fasting.

This module aims to examine molecular mechanisms of cellular adaptation to environment and to study examples of disease arising from dysfunction at the genetic, transcriptional or translational level

This module aims to provide students with a comprehensive overview of the key concepts, techniques and current laboratory practice in Cellular Pathology (Histopathology and Cytopathology). The module will allow students to develop an understanding of the role this biomedical science discipline plays in the diagnosis, assessment and treatment of disease

This course aims to give an in-depth understanding of research methodologies applied in modern molecular biology. It is intended primarily as preparation for postgraduate research, but also serves to highlight and consolidate understanding of the key processes applied within the biotech industry.

This module take students through a study of molecular genetics as associated with prokaryotes and eukaryotes. On completion of the module students should have a comprehensive understanding about the nature and character of prokaryote and eukaryote genomes, aspects of their continuing evolution, protocols for their manipulation and associated consequences.

The aim of this module is to introduce the subject of microbiology and to demonstrate the importance of microbes in human infection. It also aims to equip the students with the knowledge of methods used to isolate and identify microbes causing infection and to select appropriate antibiotics for the treatment of infections.

A. Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Disease 

The aim of this part of the module is to provide an overview of microbiology and infectious diseases within the community and hospital setting.

B. Food Microbiology

The aim of this part of the module is for the student to develop an appreciation of the relationship between food and health, and an understanding of the role of a biomedical scientist in the isolation of food borne pathogens from food and clinical samples implicated in outbreaks of food-borne disease.

This is an individual project involving the preparation of a project proposal and research work within a key biomedical sciences discipline. The research will involve generation, critical review and analysis of data.

The aim of this module is to equip students with advanced theoretical knowledge of aspects of the biological basis of human disease (pathobiology). Students should be able to reflect on and integrate information learned in specific clinical modules.

The aim of this module is to impart sound, advanced knowledge of the human endocrine system in both health and disease. Students will gain considerable knowledge of diagnostic and research methods as applied to the endocrine laboratory.

This module is designed to discuss detail some of the more important biological techniques and how they are applied at the basic level by laboratory researchers and how they are exploited in industrial processes. The module draws heavily on in-vitro tissue culture and enzymes. There are also discussions on gene therapy, modern genetic engineering methodologies and monoclonal antibodies.

The module aims to teach the biology underlying the pathophysiology of haematological disorders and the interpretation of clinical data. Upon completion of the module, the student is able to describe the normal functioning of haematological systems; describe the diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of haematological disorders; describe the preparation and uses of blood products, and the risks associated with their use.
